It is SOOO *&*%$% Cold Here!

Ξ November 23rd, 2006 | → 2 Comments | ∇ Costa Rica, Family, Life in Costa Rica, Maria Luisa |

Yesterday, at about 7:00am, we hit 12.5 degrees Celsius or about 54.5 Fahrenheit) – and that appparently set a record for November that lasted about 25 years. It is NASTY here! It is STILL cold today, but a bit better.

Now all you North Americans, don’t even START on how sad you are that we have temps in the 50’s. If you’re still living there, it is because you want to. We Costa Rica transplants have voted NO SNOW and that includes NO COLD. We don’t even DO furnaces here.

Anyway, ML will be home soon… so that means we either go to Thanksgiving Dinner or to bed… either is fine with me!

Stupid (but funny) (R rated)

Ξ November 9th, 2006 | → 1 Comments | ∇ Costa Rica, Humor, Quotes, Whatever |

I get emails every few days with someone’s idea of silliness. Usually, they are not funny. Some are just grossly off-color, and while I am not a prude, I have lost patience with the raw stuff.

However, this morning I received these gems… I have no idea if these people actually said these things… I always have doubts, but who really cares? Pretty funny stuff IMHO. I am probably violating someone’s copyright, though I am not sure if that is possible if these are actual quotes.

The Middle East

Ξ November 5th, 2006 | → 7 Comments | ∇ Costa Rica, Ewwwwww!, Humor, News and Comments, The Middle East, Whatever |

Map of the Middle EastThe Middle East seems to me like a festering hole. Last night, the Clinton News Network (CNN) tells me there are now something like 8 countries rushing to build “the bomb”.

This made me want to know exactly where ARE these countries in relation to one another. Therefore, you may click the thumbnail map above for a full sized view of the area.

I believe this will place everything in perspective for my loyal readers!

Fun with CAJA

Ξ November 4th, 2006 | → 3 Comments | ∇ CAJA, Costa Rica, Health and Welfare, Life in Costa Rica, Retire to Costa Rica |

blood_test.jpgA recent downturn in my health has brought me into very close contact with the CAJA system, and more accurately, the system in Hospital Calderon Guardia, the second largest CAJA hospital in Costa Rica.

There are two types of health care here, public (the CAJA) and private. If you are here in country with your (legal) residency, you may join CAJA for almost nothing. Very cheap insurance indeed. The private system is far more expensive but costs can be covered by buying any number of international insurance poiicies or by using your friendly, local monopoly, the INS.

So what do Tiger Woods and a lab worker in CAJA have in common?

Drugstores (farmacias) in Costa Rica

Ξ October 25th, 2006 | → 12 Comments | ∇ Costa Rica, Health and Welfare, Life in Costa Rica, Retire to Costa Rica |

mortar_and_pestle.jpgPharmacies in Costa Rica are quite different than those you find in North America. A regente or pharmacist runs each pharmacy. Most, if not all, also have their doctorate. They can provide a lot of help in choosing medicines and providing good advice.

The services are quite different. You can get an injection or you can buy a pill. Yeah… one pill… or 6… or 11. Many people here cannot afford a whole bottle, so they can buy just what they need for 1 or 2 days, then return to buy more if needed.

One of the good… or bad… things about a Costa Rican drugstore (aka droguería but far more common in Costa Rica, farmacia) is that you can also buy just about any prescription drug you want without a prescription.

While this seems like a great deal, and maybe it is, when a person makes the decision to self-medicate, to buy a prescription drug without a physician’s advice, the burden of making the correct decision is removed from the hands of the doctor and placed squarely in the hands of the person buying that prescription.

Now Get HisFault by Email

Ξ October 21st, 2006 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Blogging stuff, Costa Rica, Geeky Stuff, News and Commentary, RSS Feed, Subscribe |

I have received several emails asking if people could just get updates to HisFault – Rants from Costa Rica – by email. They prefer to receive new Posts by email so as to not have to deal with RSS or visit a ton of blogs to see if anything new has been added.

This turned out to be a pretty simple request thanks to the folks at Feedburner, the company that handles my RSS feeds.

To subscribe, just place your email address in the form at the top-left. You will receive a verifying email which you must answer, then you will be all set. The system will send you a copy of any new posts in HTML format. They will be sent at about 6-9 AM CST. No posts? No email.

I am in love with another woman…

OK… perhaps it is more of a lustfull thing. I am totally in love lust with Shakira.

I explained to Maria that should Shakira decide to come to Costa Rica searching desperately for a 60+, overweight Gringo with whom she could spend her declining years, I would have to consider leaving my wonderful wife… forthwith. Well I tried to say that, but I didn’t know how to say forthwith in Spanish. For those of you who know not who is shakira, read on…

Getting a Boob Job? Better pay up!

Ξ October 4th, 2006 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Costa Rica, Hmmm!, Humor, Idle Thoughts, News and Commentary, Whatever |

I always like those goofy news articles.

boobs.jpgThe one I read today was about a German plastic surgeon who apparently got fed up with his non-paying breast enhancement clients and decided to send their photos to the the local police in hopes of having them tracked down.

It seems all of the ladies just sort of walked out after the surgery without as much as a “by-your-leave” leaving the good doctor paymentless.

“Tanja” went out for “fresh air” after 8,000-euro ($10,000) surgery to enlarge her breasts. “She never came back and never paid,” Koenig said. He now plans to demand payment in advance.

It seems he also prepared “wanted posters” showing his handiwork.

Now correct me if I am wrong here, but just who is going to SEE these boobs? Husbands, boyfriends, various lovers? And that begs more questions!

1. Who is going to report this if they DO happen to stumble across those felonious knockers?

2. Who REALLY looks at them all that closely in the first place? I mean we need a POSITIVE ID right?? I happen to believe that a truly close breast examination often provides just too much information for the average viewer.

3. Presuming an arrest… Will there be a line-up?

4. Just how much freedom have the German police to examine the… ummm… the evidence… and maybe MOST important,

5. Anyone know where can I get ahold of one of those wanted posters!

Hoo are you?

A couple of nights ago, Piro started to go crazy in the back yard. This in itself is not so strange as she is a nutty animal under the best of circumstances and can always find something to go crazy about, but this was about 1 AM on a nasty, cold and rainy night and that bore some checking out. ML went to the window and announced that “something big” was in the back yard. I figured she was talking about the pool. Those of you who have spend any time on this blog know that my dear wifey is prone to…emmm… exagerate things. I decided the bed was a better option.

Something I learned today

Ξ September 28th, 2006 | → 8 Comments | ∇ Costa Rica, Ewwwwww!, Food, Health and Welfare, Humor, Idle Thoughts, Whatever |

Lately, my health has taken a bit of downturn. Seems that past a certain age, things begin to break. I am also becoming intimately familiar with the CAJA health care system in Costa Rica which I will expound upon soon in a future post.
