Tico Shot in Miami

Ticos (Costa Ricans) are such a peaceful people… fun loving and gentle… and certainly not confrontory (unless they have been hitting the guaro too hard. In fact when ML and I first saw the news yesterday about a Tico being shot, our first reaction was this was some typical Tico prank that got out of hand.

Sadly, it appears the gentlemen in question, Rigoberto Alpízar Medina, may have been suffering from a bi-polar disorder, and having failed to take his medicine, was acting in a threatening and aggressive manner which ultimately led to his death. The fact that he was moreno (darker skinned) probably did not help the situation.

Alpizar was born in the province of Guanacaste (Nicoya) was a nationalized citizen of the US, and married to a a US national having met his wife, Anne Buechner, when she was studying in Costa Rica. His family here currently resides in the Golfito area near the frontier of Panama. Alpizar was returning from a trip to Equador and Peru where he visited well known ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. He was an employee of Home Depot.

There is no apparent reaction, either negative or positive, to the story here in CR. Just sort of a sadness. Rogelio Ramos, Costa Rica Security Minister, stated he needed to learn more before expressing an opinion.
