Tim, here we go again :-) I had to read this story about your adventure visiting with your wife Puntarenas and laughed and cried about your delightful writing style. And, although my husband sleeps already for hours [it's 12:44 AM here in Arizona], I just can not stop reading your writings. I recall that you mentioned in one of your stories that you are a journalist, and what an excellent professional you are!!

My husband will become envious because I spent so much time visiting your web sites to get a big smile on my face and laugh heartily about your wonderful descriptions, really of your daily life. YOU ARE FANTASTIC :-)
Have to go to bed now..... don't you ever stop writing for all of us!!
Greetings, Chris

Tim,

Even though I'm a bit late for this article, it cracked me up so I just had to respond. My wife is originally from Puntarenas, and the first time I went there, I told her I wasn't sure I ever wanted to go back. Since then, I have learned to be OK with the place, but the humidity, the fish smell (good thing I'm a rabid fisherman), and the kind of crappy beach makes me just want to use the place for nothing more than the ferry. However, there are some good places there, Hotel Fiesta being one, and a bunch of good and cheap restaurants there. I do still have family there, so I will likely always end up there every now and then, but for my money, I'd rather go somewhere else... Great post, made me laugh!

I just discovered your site today, and I am amazed at your story-telling talent. I don't know your occupation, but I hope it affords you the opportunity to use your great gift. Thank you for all the valuable information and especially the entertaining way you present it!

Kindest regards,

I actually think Puntarenas IS better than ten years ago. It has potential, and one day, someone with a lot of $$$ and some vision is going to buy some land cheap and make a silk purse outta that sow's ear.

Maybe I'll be alive... doubt it though.

A friend of ours had a "Condo" in Puntarenas, which he let us use for a weekend (this must have been 10-15 years ago). The pool wad green and the bats were crawling around the ceiling (you could hear them and see the dust falling from the crown molding when they moved) Turn back the covers on the bed and "las cucas" scurried for cover. Stayed up all night and slept on the beach in the morning. The best part of the trip was a "pipa con guaro" I'm now a "socio" at Punta Leona and loving it. They say Puntarenas has changed a lot (for the better) over the years; but your story only exemplifies why I'm reticent to return.
