OMG!!! This is by far the best reading I have done in ages... So I'm the Canadian, where it snows and gets real cold... Bugs... Whats a bug? LOL, It has been years, since I was a teen, that I wanted leave this forsaken COLD country, and now after 10 years with my wife, I finally got her started on topics of leaving this country. After much research, I fell in love with Costa Rica, well at least the theory part, living must be completely different. So first off, I would like to thank Tim for sharing his knowledge and information...... Now the question is... How do I sell the "bugs" to my wife??? How do I sell it to myself??? LOL

I have to agree with everyone that this story was hilarious and dead on.
My husband and I visited CR in Feb 2007 for 7 days. I was 6 months pregnant. We rented a house near the beach. As the property manager showed us the rooms, I was looking out the huge picture window at the ocean view in the master bedroom. As I walked away something huge caught my eye above me. It was a spider. I was prepared at that time to pay any penalty that the airfare would make me pay. The PM assured me that, that was the biggest I would see. Well he lied! With 4 days of sleeping with a light on, towels pushed under every door, sleeping with one eye open. Im in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and I hear what sounds like a woman screaming. I was confused because I knew it was just my husband and I in the house. I walk to the top of the stairs and say quietly Shawn you down there? He screams back babe you gotta come down here! Im thinking your f*&#ing crazy if Im gonna come down there and your 6'0 220lb a$$ is screaming like a little girl. So, I walk to the middle landing as I'm making my way down the darn thing must have moved! Cause he ran past me, leaving me on the staircase screaming Wait! You a$$hole don't leave us here! I was paralyzed with fear, I literally couldn't move. Somehow I got the courage and high tailed my big butt up the stairs 2 at a time. We laugh about it now and are even going to move there next year. Bugs freak me out and obviously huge bugs bring out the inner girl in Shawn, but the experience out weighs our fears. Thanks for the awesome info!

Thanks, Tim for scaring the Ba-Jesus out of me a bit more with the roaches. My husband and I moved to CR about 5 weeks ago after visiting for over 12 years. Finally, we made the plunge. Google Las Tumbas, CR and I am pretty sure that you will find a pic of a cockroach...the ONLY thing on this planet that makes me squeal like someone is pulling my teeth out through my toenails! Any help to make me feel better about a roach is appreciated. Beetles, bats, snakes, centipedes, millipedes (pick a critter) no problem, BUT the ROACH, we have our issues.

Hello from Arizona!
I just enjoy your writing style [and information, of course] so very much. My husband and I want/ed to move to Costa Rica and I try to accummulate as much information as I can get to be informed about this beautiful country.
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!! I am, as many of your reader's commented before, terrified of creepy crawlers :-(
Should that really prevent me from coming to Costa Rica??
AND, Is TicoGrande really your name? Can't you give us your professional writer name? I read aloud to my husband your excellently written description of the creepy crawlers in Costa Rica; several times I had to stop, because tears of laughter and recognition overwhelmed me :-)
I said to my husband "I want to move to Costa Rica because of this great writer!" What a wonderful person to know, you must be - and what a delight it must/would be to make your wife's and your acquaintance.
My husband is also a writer and retired Wagnerian opera singer. Now he mostly composes and sings only to me :-) How could we get his grand piano to Costa Rica? He rather would divorce me than part from his grand piano :-(

Greetings, Chris

Just returned to wintery Chiacgo after a long vacation in Costa Rica. Our first romantic night on Valenties day was - err - interrupted by a gi-normous cockroach and an even larger sub tarantrala furry spider[not sure the latin name for ginormous]. Thats what you get with an outdoor shower :). It did not however - fly in our face...sure the mosquito net was 'for show'...

WOW! I think you just talked me out of moving to Costa Rica! The reason I refuse to visit Japan in the rainy season & summer are the flying humongous cockroaches. I have similar stories of them flying in my face, or spraying so much deet into a coffee mug it swam away. (My husband is Japanese & we have a big family there.) Of course, now I live in Arizona & have to deal with millipedes & scorpions.
I'm glad I found your site.
